This comes as a tangible threat to public health, considering that, according to the United States Department of Veteran Affairs, at least 8 million adults in the country are struggling with PTSD at any given time, and it is estimated that at least 7 to 8 percent of the population will develop it at some point in their lives. Furthermore, until now, it was known that PTSD severely affected the subject’s mental health. However, its effects on the person’s physical well-being were underrepresented until now. While some studies have related the presence of PTSD with other conditions such as heart failure, Roberts’ study has linked it with autoimmune diseases such as lupus.
