Benefits of Probiotics at the Onset of Gluten Intolerance

The Study

According to the study conducted by Lund University, headed by Dr. Daniel Agardh, Lactobacillus Plantarum Heal 9 & Lactobacillus Paracasei 8700:2 are capable of boosting the body’s immune system which may cause the delay of the onset of celiac disease in children.

The study was conducted by testing 78 Swedish children who are genetically predisposed to gluten intolerance. About 40 of these students were given a combination of Lactobacillus Plantarum Heal 9 & Lactobacillus Paracasei 8700:2 while the remaining 38 children were given maltodextrin placebo.

After six months of conducting the trial, the group of children, who were given the probiotic strains, has reduced levels of tissue transglutaminase autoantibodies (tTGA). On the other hand, those who were given the placebo have an increased level of these antibodies.

Findings suggest that the said probiotic strains are capable of blocking the autoimmunity of celiac disease on genetically predisposed children. This is a possibility that the emergence of this condition will be delayed due to the disabling capacity of the probiotic strains towards the autoimmunity of the celiac disease.
