Mathias's challenges
Although Mathias has made leaps and bounds in his development since he was diagnosed, he still faces plenty of challenges. He began kindergarten earlier this year, which forced him and his parents to confront an environment that isn’t designed to be friendly to children like him. Lisa has been fighting to have Mathias placed in an IEP (individualized education program) which is guaranteed as part of the public school system, but so far she’s been unable to get him the extra help he needs. Still, Mathias enjoys going to school and being part of the community.
