Communicating With Those Who Have Autism: A Reminder for Healthcare Professionals

Sharon's story

Sharon had worked as a care aide for years, but since the Spring of 2016, she began having back problems that made it hard for her to work. Within a year, the pain got significantly worse, and despite many different treatments and medications, nothing could make her pain better. Finally, she was diagnosed with an extruded disk in January of 2017.

Doctors told Sharon that she needed surgery. They told her not to worry because it was a very routine procedure. However, even though the doctors were familiar with her autism, the entire process quickly turned into a nightmare.
