Coping with the Pain of Fibromyalgia

Find a gentle physical activity that works for you

Despite the pain, gentle exercising is a great way to reduce its symptoms. When we've written about this in the past, a few people get angry and say "if they could, they would."  We are not suggesting you sign up for a marathon or even a 5K. We are talking about moving. Moving more than you do now. If you do nothing, try walking. If you walk, perhaps incorporate some beginner yoga. Gentle movements and stretches that will give you respite from the pain, as well as improve their symptoms of fatigue. As a general rule of thumb, a patient should aim to perform around 20 to 30 minutes of exercise, at least 3 days a week. Some of these exercises can be walking or swimming, which are low-impact.
