Driving with Sleep Apnea

Testing How Obstructive Sleep Apnea Affects Driving

The team in charge of this study was composed by Dr.Akshay Dwarakanath and Dr. Mark Elliott, both colleagues at St. James’ University Hospital in the U.K. Both doctors decided that in order to measure the abilities of drivers with obstructive apnea syndrome, a driving simulator was the best option.

The group selected for the test was formed by 129 people affected by obstructive sleep apnea that were not under any kind of treatment for the condition plus 79 people that did not suffer from obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. People that did not suffer from the syndrome used the simulator one time while people affected by the syndrome used it two times. The main purpose of the driving simulator was to test the ability of the driver to stay in their lane.
