Experimental Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Cures Man's Diabetes

Life after surgery was difficult, but now he has a lot more energy than he did before

Life after surgery has been rough, especially in the first few months. However, he's never had more energy. During his recovery, he sat down with his 6-year-old son, who also suffered from diabetes, to explain why he didn’t use an insulin pump anymore.

“I hadn’t told him that I didn’t have diabetes anymore,” said Matt. “He was so young and I wasn’t sure he would understand. I didn’t want to give him false hope, because he can’t get a pancreas. I explained to him that he had to have a failing kidney, and our prayer is that he never gets to that point. After I explained it to him, he said, ‘I’m glad you don’t have diabetes anymore.’”
