Eye Disorders Associated with Muscular Dystrophy

Myotonic Dystrophy

It is a multi-system disease that is characterized by muscular wasting. Decreased visual acuity, weakening of extra-ocular muscles, ophthalmoplegia, and symptoms of ptosis may be present from the very early stages of the disease.

In myotonic dystrophy a person may have blurred vision, difficulty to focus on another object if eyes have been focused on one thing for too long. Internal eye pressure is decreased. Fogging of the lens of development of cataract is also more common(3).

Newer studies also seem to indicate the higher risk of macular degeneration in those who have myotonic dystrophy(4).
