Federal Lawmakers Support Autism with Safety and Wandering Act

Communities have creative solutions

Cities and communities are also banding together to come up with their own solutions to the problem of wandering persons. Some townships have assembled a registry of all special needs individuals, with their personal information and habits made available to first responders and law enforcement officials. Other cities are taking extra care to ensure that students or children are accounted for at all times, placing alarms on doors or sensors that notify supervisors when a certain boundary is crossed.

To prevent future tragedies such as those that happened with Kevin and Avonte, the community needs to come together in awareness and support of individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. As technology continues to expand, perhaps the day will come when we do not need to worry about the dangers of wandering off.
