Federal Lawmakers Support Autism with Safety and Wandering Act

How was this legislation introduced?

The legislation was introduced by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa, and Senator Chuck Schumer of New York. Grassley empathizes with families that have to go through the terrifying moment of “frantically trying to locate a missing loved one whose condition causes him or her to wander off.” He believes that the new technologies being implemented will be as beneficial to the autism community as the Amber Alert program has been to missing persons cases.

Schumer believes that the implementation of modern technologies will solve what has long been a problem for caregivers and parents. He says that “this technology will allow parents of all children with autism, no matter their means, to use the benefits of a high-tech solution to an age-old problem.” The tracking technologies made available to law enforcement personnel are voluntary, and require parent or caregiver consent before they are implemented in an emergency situation.
