People like Frey cannot battle other illnesses when their bodies are already so weak
In Frey’s case, health experts speculate that the combination of ailments and medications he may have been taking could have weakened his immune system to the point where he could no longer fight off the pneumonia. Individuals with RA already have a two-fold risk of infection and the risk increases with age, hospitalization and surgery – as in Frey’s case. Dr. Eric Matteson, a rheumatologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, stated that any or all of these factors could have contributed to his pneumonia. “People who battle rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis, and for as long as Glenn Frey did, are incredibly courageous,” he said.
