His Heart Completely Healed on its Own

His Heart Completely Healed on its Own

When 23-year-old Michael Crowe, threw up for four days straight, he thought he simply had a stomach bug. But, his mother knew better. She took him to a local emergency room where they learned that his heart was pumping blood at a slow rate, at 25 percent. When he transferred an hour later, it went down to just 10 percent. He was diagnosed with a virus that caused his heart to be inflamed. The doctors told him that his heart only had a 30 percent chance to recover. Facing this, Crowe described himself as “strangely calm.”

He was hooked onto an ECMO to pump his blood for his heart, but this fix was only temporary. Soon, Crowe needed a transplant in order to survive. After 17 days of waiting, doctors finally had gotten a call that said he would have a transplant at midnight. But, that day, they also found out that Michael had a blood infection that would make a transplant too dangerous to carry out. This was devastating for both his family and doctors.

However, it wasn’t over yet.

One of his doctors, Dr. Raichlin, noticed his blood pressure beginning to rise. When she ordered a test, they found that the left side of his heart was returning to normal capacity. She ordered another test, and saw the same results. He was then hooked up to a machine that only worked with the right side of his heart. Four days later, he didn’t need the heart transplant. His heart completely healed itself.
