The growing movement to increase neurodiversity in the workplace is certainly a positive thing for the autistic community. Increasingly, major corporations like Microsoft are opening their doors wide to autistic employees. Many companies cite a desire to increase neurodiversity as well as the recognition that autistic individuals may be particularly skilled for technical work as motivation for this move towards neurodiversity. While the acceptance and at times eagerness to hire autistic individuals is commendable, companies also need to be sure that they remember these employees are people first, and that they’re providing these employees with the opportunities and resources they need to have healthy, happy, fulfilling lives.
