How to Be an Encouraging Companion to a Friend or Relative with Parkinson’s Disease

Take a walk or a trip, and play games

A relaxing walk provides gentle exercise, a change of scenery, and great conversations- all mutually beneficial. It just might make their day. Keeping the mind active can prevent further neurological deterioration, so engage in activities which challenge the brain. Crossword puzzles, trivia, riddles and game shows on TV may be fun ways to keep the brain sharp. If playing a game in which writing or moving small pieces is needed and the patient’s hand stability has been badly damaged by the disease, offer to write the answers or move the pieces for them. Take them on a day trip. Going somewhere new and exciting creates a fresh, fun memory for both of you. It also gives them something to look forward to and a reason to get out of the house and get active.
