How to Tell if Someone Has Lupus

Lupus patients can develop nephritis, a type of kidney inflammation. An inflamed kidney will filter waste and toxins with difficulty. Lupus Foundation of America suggests that nephritis start when someone is diagnosed with lupus and within five years.
Symptoms of kidney inflammation include:
- Pain in the side
- Darker urine
- High blood pressure
- Urinating frequently during the night
- Blood in the urine
- Swelling in lower feet and legs
Sometimes early symptoms may not be noticed. After diagnosis, doctors recommend kidney function monitoring. If lupus nephritis is left untreated, the end-stage renal disease might develop.
