Spots and pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, cysts, nodules develop on the face due to acne, especially on the shoulder, neck, chest, back and upper arms. It is the most common skin condition which occurs during puberty. The sebaceous gland activates during puberty. Although it can occur at any age. It is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. The bacteria Propionibacterium acnes live on the skin and contribute the pimple infection.
Due to hormonal changes when excess amount of sebum and dead skin cells are produced. They tend to block the hair follicles. They form a soft plug which becomes an ideal environment for the bacteria to thrive which causes infection of the hair follicle and inflammation. The wall of the hair follicle bulges and results in formation of a pimple.
Acne can be severe or mild.
Mild acne- by using simple home remedies or by using over the counter medication we can easily get rid of mild acne effectively. These medications are available without the doctor’s prescription.
Severe acne- if the acne is severe then in order to get rid of acne the person has to visit the skin specialist or dermatologist. The medication available such as oral antibiotics, lotion or cream, needs to be prescribed by the doctor.
Oral /topical antibiotics
Oral antibiotics such as erythromycin and tetracycline help to get rid of acne by stopping their growth and also reduce inflammation. However, for this prescription of the dermatologist is needed.
Propeionibacterium acnes is the bacteria that causes acne. They can be reduced by oral antibiotics. It is initially started with a higher dose. This dose is gradually made less as the acne reduces. The bacteria may become resistant to the antibiotic over a period of time. In six months the acne can become resistant.
Treat cystic acne with intralesional corticosteroid injection

Sometimes the acne is hormonal type. Topical antimicrobials available are clindamycin and sodium sulfacetamide and topical retinoids are tazarotene, tretinoin and adapalene.
Over the counter medications- normally they do not require prescription from a doctor and are easily available at a pharmacy. They are of different types used to treat acne.
The common active ingredients found are:
Salicyclic acid- it has anti-inflammatory and swelling properties. It prevents the blockage of pores. Clean and clear advantage acne spot treatment- apply twice daily all over the face. They contain 2 percent salicylic acid.
Resorcinol- it prevents blackhead and whitehead acnes. It comes from various resins. Also this active ingredient is used in the treatment of eczema, dandruff and psoriasis.
Sulfur- it prevents black head and whitehead acnes.
Benzoyl peroxide- it kills the bacteria and also reduces the production of oil. Clearasil ultra rapid action vanishing treatment cream is available without prescription and it contains 10 percent of benzoyl peroxide.
Azelaic acid- it is available in the form of soap, gels, creams and lotions. It reduces the production of oil. It also slows the growth of bacteria. Usually patients with darker skin use this ingredient.
It is a high tech remedy which uses suction methods to deep clean the pores without trauma. The light pulse kills the bacteria causing acne, its redness and prevents breakout and treats them effectively. In order to calm breakout and also prevent scar isolaz treatment can be used once per several weeks. This remedy is recommended by the dermatologist.
It reduces the sebum secretion. It also reduces the infection of acne. For severe acne it is the best oral retinoid treatment. Its anti inflammatory properties help to treat acne. Usually it is a course of five months but is recommended for long term treatment. Tea tree oil – it prevents mild acne. It is an alternative of benzoyl peroxide cream. A cotton pad should be soaked in oil and dipped in water and then applied to the affected area. This should be done three times per day. It has anti bacterial and anti fungal properties. Dilute it before using it.
Baking soda- generally used for treatment-resistant acne. Its antiseptic properties help to destroy the bacteria, also the growth of new skin cells is stimulated. It is mixed with water to form a paste and as a scrub the paste is used on the skin for 30 seconds.
Oatmeal – it is used in making the skin smooth and also helps to heal the skin.
Aspirin- its anti inflammatory properties help reduce the pimple.
Honey- it heals and reduces pimples and helps remove dirt from the skin.
Garlic- its anti oxidant, anti fungal, anti bacterial and anti viral properties helps to fight against acne. Garlic also helps to purify the blood and prevent future break out.
Egg white mask- it removes pimples and heals the scar. The vitamins and amino acids present in it help to rebuild the cells of the skin.
Steam- it helps open up blocked pores and prevent their clogging. Also it detoxifies the skin and is helpful in treating acne.
Aloe Vera gel- it cools the skin, removes the oiliness from the skin and reduces the inflammation caused due to the pimples. It gives a pleasant and a soothing effect to the skin.
Take care of the skin in following ways
Use a non-drying soap to clean the skin, to remove the make up and dirt.
Do not scratch and squeeze a pimple or acne. It may make the condition worse.
Avoid touching you face with hands or fingers.
Diet- some studies have revealed that restriction on diary product can help improve acne, Avoid processed food. A significant correlation had been found of acne with pasta, bread, white rice. These high glycemic index foods are quickly converted into simple sugar. The flow of insulin is triggered by the sugars which may increase the effect of androgens on acne.
Do not pick- it can cause the bacteria to spread; it can cause additional breakout and permanent scarring.
Rid of blackheads- those having acne have pretty good chances of getting blackheads too. The oils and debris within the clogged pores may cause blackheads. Every morning exfoliates with 2 percent or less salicylic acid. Let it remain for a minute and rinse.
