This means of inheriting risk is different than inheriting genetic risk, but shows that increased risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease is partially dependent on a mother’s condition surrounding the time of birth. This research falls in line with other research that suggests that the health of the gut microbiome is imperative to the overall health of the individual. What is more significant is that the mother’s microbiome may also play a role in the child’s risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease.
