Long-Term Health Risks of Untreated Celiac Disease

Neurological disorders

Neurological disorders might be the primary presentation of celiac disease in some cases, while in other cases they may be a secondary complication of it. These diseases may occur due to a deficiency of vitamins and nutrients and chronic inflammation because of the effect of antibodies on brain cells and the settling of immune complexes in the brain.

It is estimated that peripheral neuropathy may be present in as many as half of all cases of celiac disease. Celiac disease is also characterized by central neurological disorders like seizures, higher prevalence of epilepsy, celiac ataxia, and dementia.
