For people with cystic fibrosis, a double lung transplant is the only option for this surgery
There are different types of lung transplants:
- Single lung transplant, where only one lung is transplanted
- Double lung transplant, where both lungs are transplanted either separately in a bilateral sequential procedure or a bilateral single procedure, meaning both lungs are transplanted at the same time
A recipient’s diagnosis typically determines if a single or double transplant is needed. In patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a double lung transplant is required because the lungs contain bacteria that can spread into a donor lung if only one lung is transplanted. Other factors include age, health and previous surgeries.
