The importance of clinical trials

Along with standard cancer care for its patients, the COG has over 100 clinical trials open at any given time. The idea of enrolling in a clinical trial can be scary, especially when it involves children. Many people have hesitations about clinical trials, such as side effects of the proposed treatment or the fear of receiving a placebo. These are certainly valid concerns. There are reasons to be skeptical, but participation in clinical trials is necessary for medical advancement. Clinical trials are the only way for new treatments to be approved for widespread use by the FDA.  While you should never enroll in a clinical trial unless you feel 100% comfortable, organizations like the COG ensure that you are in good hands.
