Managing Diabetic Neuropathy: What Patients Need to Know

Alternative therapies can also be used to treat neuropathic pain

There are alternative medications that can provide relief from pain. These are:

  • Capsaicin cream applied to your skin reduces pain sensations in some people.
  • Alpha-lipoid acid is an antioxidant found in some foods and can help relieve nerve pain symptoms.
  • TENS or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation can be prescribed. This therapy prevents pain signals from reaching your brain as tiny electrical impulses send electrical impulses to specific pain pathways. TENS can work but remember that it may not work for you.
  • Acupuncture can relieve neuropathic pain, and here are no side effects, but you may not get immediate relief.
