Celiac disease is becoming more popular because it has significantly increased its rate of affected people with the passage of time. People becoming more aware of the condition and how it affects the lives of people who are gluten intolerant have led big companies and franchises, such as McDonald's, to produce gluten-free options for people with celiac disease.

However, the list keeps growing. It is still not clear what is the reason behind the increase in the number of people suffering from this condition, what is there to know is that pollution and genes play both a big part in the problem, and that as of now there are no cures or remedies that can solve the condition permanently. Those with this disease have to change their dietary habits for life.

With the number of people suffering from this condition extending, the number of celebrities affected by celiac disease increases as well. These are some of the celebrities who have been diagnosed with the condition:

  • Victoria Beckham (renowned singer who was part of the group called Spice Girls, wife of the now retired soccer player David Beckham)
  • Novak Djokovic (the internationally known professional tennis player from Serbia who has won 3 Australian open championships as well as many other titles)
  • Jessica Simpson (famous singer and musician who reached international fame in country music)
  • Zooey Deschanel (movies and TV star known for her parts in productions such as 500 Days of Summer, New Girl, etc.)

The list goes on and on, and 6 to 7 new cases, involving celebrities, seem to happen each year.

Mandy Moore has an Endoscopy to Determine if She Suffers from Celiac Disease

The renowned American artist Mandy Moore, famous for her ability to act, sing and also write may be the next celebrity added to the list of Hollywood stars suffering from celiac disease. During the first week of October, Moore uploaded a story to her Instagram account where she revealed she had just had an upper endoscopy to determine if she suffers from celiac disease or not.

Just a couple of months ago the star has already made clear that she was suffering from complications related to a digestive disorder, and she even got to ask fans for suggestions on how to counter said conditions.

It is important to highlight that an upper endoscopy is the only current way to determine whether someone is suffering from a celiac disorder or not.

What Kind of Symptoms Does Someone with Celiac Disease Display?

The reason that pushed Mandy to go to the hospital and have her stomach checked with an upper endoscopy were a number of symptoms she started displaying, which just seemed to be digestive disorders. For this reason, it is important to keep in mind the kind of symptoms that people with celiac disease display.

Celiac disease is a disorder characterized by inflammation in the small intestine and the inability to absorb nutrients from foods properly. It has been determined that genes play an important role in the development of celiac disease, for this reason it is very important for people with parents, grandparents or any other close relative with the condition who start feeling any of these symptoms have themselves checked for celiac disease. As for now, this autoimmune disorder has only been identified as a hereditary condition.

These are some of the most common signs of celiac disease:

  • Abdominal pain along with inflammation of the abdominal zone
  • Constipation
  • Weight loss
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Feeling of fullness when eating, even small quantities

Although these are some of the most popular signs displayed by people with celiac disease, the condition varies depending on the affected person. Especially in kids, the condition may cause different symptoms that may not seem related to celiac disease. It is also believed that other symptoms derived by celiac disorder are anemia, joint pain and numbness.

In the view of any of the aforementioned signs, it is a good idea to see a doctor and have an upper endoscopy. Especially for people who have a relative with celiac disease.

Celiac Disease: a Condition that Requires a Total and Permanent Change in Dietary Habits

Although celiac disease does not have to be a reason to quit a job, or to stop playing some sport, it does require people to change their dietary habits permanently. Celiac disease is defined as a condition that causes an adverse reaction when gluten is consumed due to the short length of villi in the intestine. Gluten can be found in wheat, barley and rye, so any kind of food with traditional dough has to be completely avoided.

Among the problems it may cause, it has been demonstrated that it may delay puberty in kids and affect both kids and adults, wearing out teeth enamel.

Right now, the only way to treat celiac disease is by following a strict gluten-free diet that helps the small intestine absorb the nutrients offered by foods. Nevertheless, it is also important to keep in mind that gluten can also cause allergic reactions on the skin of celiac people, some products that are not related to nutrition also contain gluten like make-up, plaster, and even some types of soap. It is important to avoid having contact with any type of gluten product.

Celiac Disease: Consequences of Not Treating it in Time

Not treating the disease in time can trigger more serious conditions and consequences such as diabetes, malnutrition and even multiple sclerosis. It is evident that with a deficient autoimmune system that is being affected by a certain condition, all problems related to these aforementioned conditions such as infertility, migraines, anemia and even intestinal tumors are more likely to appear.

However, there are many types of recipes and products that do not contain gluten. As the condition becomes more popular, restaurants, supermarkets and even big franchises are including new gluten-free options in their stocks and menus. Suffering from celiac disease does not mean having to eat the same all the time.
