Medical Mystery: Thyroid Resistance in Fibromyalgia

Doctor took years to stabilize this woman's condition

However, it took years of continuous thyroid replacement therapies, and many physicians still cannot stabilize the woman’s thyroid hormonal levels. Review of the woman’s full thyroid gland function panels for 2009 to 2014 showed that her TSH remained drastically high, even though her T4 levels were normal due to the application of different doses of thyroid replacement therapy. A thyroid ultrasound conducted resulted in a very normal thyroid gland with just a few non-invasive nodules. Likewise, the patient’s magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a probable pituitary microadenoma on the right side. While doctors prescribed her medications to make sure her levels stabilized, but she did not show for follow-up appointments.
