One Woman’s Powerful Story of Living with Multiple Sclerosis

Unforeseen amputation

One day, the doctor came into her room and removed the blankets covering her feet. She was fascinated by a brilliant shade of turquoise, before realizing that the blue was the color of her toes. It turned out that Colleen had developed a nasty bout of gangrene on her toes and her hand. Colleen tearfully listened as the doctor told her they would have to amputate her foot and hand. As the doctors left to schedule her surgery, Colleen remembers sobbing uncontrollably in her bed while begging her mother not to go. She suddenly felt like a child again, needing her mom to stay by her side.
