Cry Your Eyes Out: 10 Reasons Crying Is Good For You

9. Crying brings you closer to your true emotions

Crying not only heals the heart, but also makes it stronger. When we cry, we become hyper aware of our emotions; we feel them more strongly and are able to properly recognize and name our pain. Biologically, weeping activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which allows the body to rest and our minds to process our feelings. Even if the relief is only temporary, simply becoming more in-tune with our emotions can make us stronger and thus better able to handle the problems at hand.

Humans are the only animals in existence who shed tears due to emotion. Doing so affirms our experiences, both good and bad, and increase our capacity for empathy. We become better communicators and thus can improve our relationships with others as well as ourselves. An increased emotional intelligence is imperative for personal growth, and the only way to raise our IQ, so to speak, is to embrace our emotions.
