Recent Studies Show Link Between Fibromyalgia and Small-Fiber Polyneuropathy

Diagnosis and Treatment

In order to diagnose SFPN a physical examination, lab tests and family medical history are usually taken and to eliminate the involvement of motor and large nerve fibers, electromyography and nerve conduction studies are done as well skin biopsies to verify loss of cutaneous nerve innervation. Treatment protocols are different for each patient and is tailored to manage or eliminate individual underlying symptoms.

These can include anti-seizure medications, anti-depressants and opiates if the pain is secondary to another condition such as fibromyalgia. If symptoms are present due to diabetic complications, some of the secondary symptoms of diabetes such as obesity may be addressed by changes in diet and exercise to reduce insulin resistance before moving on to other treatment methods.
