By keeping a patient's lungs hydrated, we hope to actually prevent the progressive damage that the disease causes over time. By starting babies with cystic fibrosis on a protective drug like this, we could potentially help patients live longer and more comfortably, even if they weren't fortunate enough to be born with that special ENaC mutation.
