Study Focuses on Link Between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Melatonin

Relationship Between Melatonin and Serotonin

To manufacture melatonin in the body, the brain has to first manufacture serotonin. Melatonin is later manufactured from the pre-manufactured serotonin. This means that the amount of melatonin in the body is proportional to the amount of serotonin in the body too, and the same goes for the amount produced during sleep at night. A low production of serotonin is equivalent to a low amount of melatonin produced. A low amount of melatonin also results in a very poor sleep for the patient, especially for patients with the obstructive sleep apnea disease. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea go through a lot of trouble trying to get a good night’s sleep. Lack of melatonin, in addition to obstructive sleep apnea, might result into something more fatal than usual.
