The Different Ways of Testing for Duchenne and the Appearance of a New Method

The importance of newborn screening and how helpful an early diagnosis would be

The method is still not recommended by the National Screening Committee (NSC) because it is not considered precise enough as it needs other methods to confirm the original diagnose.

But there is another concern for NSC. The committee argues against the use of this new method for testing and diagnosing newborns and it is due to the lack of evidence about the benefits of early treatment with steroids on children with Duchenne which are part of the most common treatments against the symptoms.

However, there are new treatments under development and it is thought that they will be more beneficial and efficient when administered at an early stage of the condition. Therefore, it is important to find out a technique that allows people to recognize the condition early enough.
