The Era of New and Exciting Treatment for Parkinson's Disease

Surgery for Parkinson's disease

Surgery is an option when all the other modes of treatment have failed.[2] Currently, deep brain stimulation (DBS) and lesioning are the two surgical treatments available for people living with Parkinson's disease.

With deep brain stimulation, a device, called an implantable pulse generator (IPG), will be implanted within the patient. This device, which is similar to a pacemaker and is of the size of a stopwatch, sends electric stimulations to certain areas of the brain. It can help treat symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and walking problems.

Lesioning is rarely performed; it involves the surgical destruction of the areas contributing to the system. This procedure has a long recovery time as compared to DBS.
