Attendings are not really mean. They want their residents to learn.
The attending physicians on Grey’s Anatomy are super hard on their residents. It’s true that medicine is a tough, competitive field, and attendings do challenge their residents to ensure they’re up to the difficult task at hand. However, most attendings aren’t downright mean to their residents. In fact, they want their residents to learn so they can succeed and become great doctors.
Attendings do challenge their residents to be at the top of their game at all times. However, they typically aren’t straight-up cruel to their residents; they keep it professional at all times. Attendings aren’t enemies or villains; their ultimate goal is to teach their residents and lead by example.
