Tips for Parenting with Multiple Sclerosis

 Don't hide MS

Don't hide MS

One immediate mistake that parents can make when navigating an MS diagnosis is attempting to hide it from their children. Children are intuitive, and they notice so much more than we perhaps give them credit. As soon as they sense that something is wrong, they will imagine for themselves what is so bad that it is being hidden from them.

Honesty is far better than trying to hide MS. Avoiding the conversation can be difficult at best for the parents, and may force kids to live with the fear and uncertainty of an unknown illness. Kids are understanding, and they are incredibly resilient to change, even scary changes. Show them that you are prepared to face the disease, that you can manage it, and they will respond with the same level of trust and confidence that you treat them with.
