Right to a safe workplace
Generally, a person’s condition cannot be used as grounds for not hiring or for termination of employment. Here are the rights that an employee with diabetes is entitled to:
- Provision of reasonable accommodations
- Protection from discrimination in relation to providing insurance plans
- Equal opportunity for hiring or gaining a promotion
- Protection from termination of employment based on medical condition (unless the diabetic employee poses a direct threat)
Therefore, awareness of the rights can also help a person when self-advocating in regard to accommodations.
