Understanding the Genetics Behind Cystic Fibrosis

Should you get tested?

Not everyone necessarily needs a genetic test for the cystic fibrosis mutation. So how do you determine whether or not to get this evaluated? According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, it's recommended that all women get tested if they are thinking about having a child. It's not required, but definitely a good idea to know whether or not you or your partner are carriers. It's still a personal choice, to discuss the test with your healthcare professional. it's best to talk about the genetic test and go over the results with someone who is knowledgeable about the test. A genetic counselor or doctor who has experience with this disease are great examples of someone you can turn to.
