Victim of Accident Caused by Undiagnosed Sleep Apnea Settles

The chairman of the NTSB is "mystified" over the President's withdrawal

In a hearing at Washington D.C. held this past February, the chairman of the NTSB said he was “mystified” at Trump’s withdrawal of the proposed federal rule on screening train crews for sleep apnea. The agency already concluded that the past two crashes were caused by the engineers’ excessive fatigue, and the failure of their employers to screen for sleep apnea, as they chose to save time and money since it was not required by law.

In the Washington hearing, chairman Robert L. Sumwalt expressed that “the public deserves alert operators.” He then added that “It’s not too much to ask.”
