Weight Loss Surgery Can Dramatically Improve Rheumatoid Arthritis, Study Finds

Why more research is necessary

Dr. Sparks noted that more research is necessary in order to assess how both surgical and nonsurgical weight loss affects RA. “You likely need quite a bit of weight loss to see the big effects that we saw in our study” stated Dr. Sparks. Moreover, Dr. El-Bogdadi stressed that it is important to be aware that bariatric surgery cannot cure RA. “Although it may improve the RA, it does not halt the disease process. Also, some of the improvements seen after bariatric surgery may even be temporary” he said.
