What Are the Health Benefits of Bitter Melon?

Of course, there are several side effects

Based on various research, it is said that bitter melon would be better when taken along with some other preventive measures as well. For example, you can make bitter melon a part of your daily diet. However, below are few of the possible side effects that you should keep in mind:

  • Though bitter melon has proven its hypoglycemic effect, there isn't enough data to recommend it as a treatment for diabetes, without proper supervision. It is not meant as a replacement therapy for insulin, if you are pre-diabetic or diabetic. You should always speak to a doctor before consuming this fruit. Since bitter melon has the tendency to lower blood sugar in an individual, it can also interact with the medications that are normally used for diabetes.
  • Individuals who recently had surgery, have lost too much blood because of fasting. The reason for it is because intake of bitter melon can cause interference with the blood sugar levels leading to certain side effects, such as fainting spells or dizziness.
  • Women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant or those who are breastfeeding should avoid consuming this fruit. Bitter melon has certain abortifacient properties that can lead to bleeding and miscarriage. It also has certain antifertility properties.
