What is the Most Common Type of MD?

Myotonic muscular dystrophy is a type of MD that is characterized by myotonia, which occurs when muscles stay contracted after performing certain movement. This type of MD can affect both males and females equally. Unlike other forms of MD, this subtype may develop in adult age. In addition to the skeletal muscles, organs including the brain, heart, eyes, digestive organs, and endocrine glands may also be affected. Those suffering from this form of MD ultimately have a decreased life expectancy.
