The gender gap in fibromyalgia: Why are women more affected than men?

The statistical mystery does not make their pain any less real or discount the credibility of these diseases, as obviously an illness does not have to be common in order to be recognized as legitimate. There is likely a scientific explanation for the gender gap; though it has not been proven, scientists speculate that hormones that predominate in the female body have some mysterious connection to the disproportionate number of women who suffer from these diseases, especially since several of the diseases, such as lupus, are usually diagnosed in a woman’s reproductive years.
