Woman in Prison Denied Compassionate Release to Take Care of her Husband with Muscular Dystrophy

But, compassionate release isn't without some positives

Take heart! There have been some successes in concerns that FAMM raised about compassionate release.

  • In 2017, the US Senate Appropriations Committee addressed concerns about the failure to grant compassionate releases. The Bureau of Prisons was directed to issue reports on the steps it is taking to increase compassionate releases. It is also instructed to provide information on the number of compassionate release requests that have been denied or granted in the last five years. The reasons for denial needs to be outlined, how long it took to handle and grant the request, and how many prisoners or family members died while their petitions were under consideration.
