Caitlin is currently being treated in the Hunter region of Australia. Recently there has been a sharp increase in the number of people diagnosed with MS. The Associate Professor Jeannette Lechner-Scott, the senior staff specialist in neurology at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle says that “In the last 15 years the prevalence and the incidence in this area has doubled.” It is not clear why there has been this increase in diagnosis. Diagnostic rates have primarily showed that the increase is in young females. Dr. Lechner-Scott says that environment and a lack exposure to sunlight, as well as diet and obesity could be playing a role.
