Autism: TV Makes Strides in New Programming

Final thoughts

Hollywood is continuing to make strides towards presenting a wider range of people in TV and films. While this move towards embracing a bigger idea of humanity is great, it’s not a step that will be completed quickly or easily. Shows like “Atypical” and “The Good Doctor” definitely represent a willingness on the part of both media creators and audiences to listen to more narratives that explore autistic characters. How well these shows actually portray life with autism, and how strongly they work to encourage understanding and empathy for the condition, rather than making fun of it or using it as a plot device is still to be seen.
