MLB Athlete Donates $3.5 Million to Fight Childhood Cancer

Special considerations for pediatric cancer

While many aspects of treating pediatric and adult cancer are the same, there are definitely some special considerations for pediatric cancer. Treating pediatric cancer requires some specialty knowledge and equipment due to the rapid growth rate of children. There also may be more caution used for certain treatments, since the long-term effects could have more of an impact when the patient is still a child at the time of treatment. While current treatment methods are solid, there is always room for improvement. Clinical trials play a role in the continuous improvement of treatment and its outcomes. Many of the specialized children’s cancer care facilities are part of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG). The COG is a clinical trials group, supported by the National Institutes of Health, that focuses solely on pediatric cancer research.
