What is Myrbetriq?

Myrbetriq (mirabegron) is a prescription medication that is FDA-approved for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB) along with its symptoms, such as urinary frequency, urgency, and leakage in adults. This medication helps control muscle spasms of the urinary tract and bladder. 

Important Notes About Myrbetriq

Individuals with severe liver or kidney disease should not use Myrbetriq, including those who have uncontrolled high blood pressure. 

Seek immediate medical attention if you have any of the following side effects while taking this medication:

  • Uneven, fast, or pounding heartbeats
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Severe headache
  • Confusion
  • Anxiety
  • Seizure
  • Buzzing in the ears
  • Painful or burning sensation when urinating

Improvement of the symptoms may take up to eight weeks. Continue taking this medicine according to your doctor's advice. Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after taking this medication for eight weeks. 

Before Usage

Individuals who are allergic to mirabegron or have any other allergies should inform their healthcare provider about it. This medication may have inactive ingredients that can cause certain allergic reactions or other issues. 

Patients with a medical history of liver or kidney disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), and other bladder issues should also inform their doctor or pharmacist before using this medication. 

Using Myrbetriq may also make people dizzy, and taking alcohol or marijuana with it can increase dizziness. For this reason, the consumption of alcoholic beverages must be regulated. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do activities that require focus and alertness after taking this medication. Speak with your healthcare provider if you are also using medical marijuana. 

Before undergoing surgery, inform your doctor or dentist of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you are using, including herbal products and other supplements. 

When it comes to pregnant women, Myrbetriq must only be taken when really needed. It is still unknown whether this medication passes into breast milk and harm a nursing baby. Speak with your doctor if you pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or currently breastfeeding before using this medicine. 

Individuals who are below 18 years old should not take this medication. 

Usage

This medication is taken once a day. Make sure to follow all the directions on the prescription label. Avoid taking this medication for a longer time than prescribed or in smaller or larger doses.  

You can take this medicine with one glass of water. It may also be taken with or without food. The extended-release tablet, must not be chewed, crushed, or broken. Swallow the tablet whole. 

Keep this medication away from moisture and heat, and store it at room temperature. 

Dosage

Adult Dose for Urinary Incontinence

  • Initial Dose: Starts at 25 mg once daily to be taken by mouth. 
  • Maintenance Dose: Ranges from 25 mg to 50 mg once daily to be taken by mouth. The dose also depends on the efficacy and tolerability of Myrbetriq in patients. 

Adult Dose for Urinary Frequency

  • Initial Dose: Starts at 25 mg once daily to be taken by mouth. 
  • Maintenance Dose: Ranges from 25 mg to 50 mg once daily to be taken by mouth. The dose also depends on the efficacy and tolerability of Myrbetriq in patients. 

If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose. It is important not to take extra doses to make up for the missed dose to avoid overdosing. Seek immediate medical attention in case of an overdose. 

Side Effects

If you experience any allergic reactions, such as difficulty breathing, hives, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat, seek immediate medical attention.

  • Fever
  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Dry mouth
  • Loss of voice or weakened voice
  • Clogged ear
  • Body aches (muscle pain, muscle stiffness, back pain)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Difficulty moving
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty in passing stools

Rare Side Effects of Myrbetriq

Serious Side Effects of Myrbetriq

  • Angioedema: The use of Myrbetriq in certain individuals can lead to allergic reactions, wherein it can lead to the swelling of the throat, face, tongue, and lips, or difficulty breathing. In such cases, you should stop the use of this medicine and check with your doctor right away.
  • Increased Blood Pressure: Myrbetriq can increase a person's blood pressure or tend to worsen the blood pressure of individuals who already have hypertension or high blood pressure. The blood pressure of individuals taking this medication should be checked and monitored by the doctor. 
  • Urinary Retention: People who have urinary retention are unable to completely empty their bladder. Myrbetriq 

Stop using this medication if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • Burning sensation or pain while urinating
  • A rise in blood pressure to dangerous levels, which can lead to symptoms, such as blurry vision, feeling confused, bleeding from the nose, abnormal heart rhythm, severe headache, anxiety attack, a pounding feeling in the ears or neck, shortness of breath, and severe chest pain.
