The Challenge of Wanderers: What Should Caregivers Do?

Final thoughts

Caring for someone with dementia is no easy task. The possibility of events such as wandering can increase the stress of the situation and adds to the list of specialized care needs for someone with the disease. And, even if you take all the necessary precautions, someone with dementia may still wander.

“When there’s a will, there’s a way,” explained Shawna Bostaph, a personal care administrator at a care facility in Pennsylvania.

Don’t feel guilty if your loved one manages to wander under your care. The important thing is to keep a clear head and respond appropriately. By following the guidelines of law enforcement and groups such as the Alzheimer’s Association, you greatly increase the chance of a safe return.
