How to Deal with Family and Friends Who Don't Understand Fibromyalgia

Be proactive

Be proactive

Now that the heavy part of the conversation is over, you can tell your family members about how hard you are working to beat fibromyalgia pain.

Dr. Teitelbaum uses the acronym SHINE, which you can share with your family. SHINE means: getting enough sleep, getting whatever hormone treatment your body may need, being proactive about infections and getting them treated as soon as possible, taking nutrition supplements and being nutritious in your food choices, and exercising to the best of your abilities. Introducing this acronym to your family and explaining how you are working on your treatment and self-care allows for them to feel involved. You being positive and confident about your treatment allows you to set the tone and take control of the situation.
