Specifically, studying the DNA inside lymphocytes (the groups of cells where non-Hodgkin lymphoma originates) to understand the progression of a normal lymphocyte into a cancerous lymphoma. Once the process of transformation is better understood scientists can begin developing medication designed to block this process, in some cases preventing the cancer from ever forming in the first place. Needless to say, this is a huge advancement, and could save potential patients from even needing to undergo treatment to begin with. Though the science isn’t at this point quite yet, research into the genetics of lymphoma cells has already given scientists enough information to develop better diagnostics test to better determine which exact type of NHL a patient has (there are many variations, so it can be difficult to pinpoint just which variation is occurring within a patient’s cells). This allows physicians to make better treatment decisions specifically geared towards the exact type of NHL that a patient is experiencing, leading to a more positive patient experience and better treatment outcomes.
