Brand: A200 Maximum Strength, A200 Time-Tested Formula, Lice-X, Licide, Medi-Lice Maximum Strength, Pronto Maximum Strength, Pyrinex, Pyrinyl, Rid, Tisit
Generic: Pyrethrin/pyrethrum extract
A200 Maximum Strength is a drug made from Pyrethrin/pyrethrum extract and is used to terminate lice from the body, head or pubic hair.
Pyrethrin is a chemical obtained from the lice and when absorbed by the lice, it destroys their nervous system and destroys them, while not harming humans as such. Piperonyl butoxide is also used in combination with these secretions to make it even more effective.
The combination of these two chemicals is called pediculicide and is available in the form of shampoo, foam, kit, liquid and jelly.
This is a non-prescription drug and can be easily obtained through pharmacies as well as general stores.
Before using A200 Maximum Strength, you must know all about the risks and complications associated with it. The decision of starting any new medication or any treatment method is done after the patient has informed the physician of any doubts in his/her mind, and has also been informed of all the details by the physician.
It is ideal that doctor and patient work as a team and the following things are considered:
Detailed history of a patient is extremely important prior to any medical therapy.
Allergies or any history of allergy to any drug, food, preservatives, dyes or animal products, history of drug usage, past medical or surgical procedure should also be kept in a record to predict any drug interaction.
Physical examination should be done before starting this drug so that any physiological or pathological condition with which this drug may interfere may be ruled out.
Age-specific assessment is much important for the safety of a patient. Geriatric studies have not been extensive to conclude the effectiveness of this combination in elderly people. However, its use has shown that there are no different side effects in elderly people than in young adults. This drug combination also has similar side effects profile in children as that of adults.
Use in pregnancy, as well as breastfeeding mothers has been considered safe but its use should be restricted to as minimum as possible.
Drug interactions may occur when many drugs are used together. Other drugs may enhance or diminish effects of pyrethrum and piperonyl butoxide combination. A consulting doctor should be well aware of the drug history of the patient and inform the patient about any possible effect. Drug interactions may occur as a result of using the counter drugs along with the therapy. Alcohol, tobacco, grapefruit juice and certain types of foods may also lead to increase in drug interactions.
Make sure you tell the doctor if there is any skin inflammation as this drug may lead to increase in its severity.
3 Proper Usage
To use A200 Maximum Strength properly, you must follow all instructions given by your doctor. The combination drug container comes with a direction leaflet or sticker. It is important for the patient to follow the instructions on the container or given by your doctor.
Avoid overuse, as it may lead to its absorption in the skin and may increase the side effects. After application on the affected area, keep it as such for ten minutes and then wash it.
Use a nit removing comb on hairy areas. As this medication does not kill nits, it is important to repeat it after 7 to 10 days to kill the newly hatched lice.
4 Precautions to Take
There are no specific requirements to be observed before, during and after using A200 Maximum Strength, however, there are some tips which can optimize the working.
Avoid inhalation or swallowing of the drugs as these may lead to serious complications. To avoid this situation, use the drugs in a room with good air flow.
Do not apply it near eyes, on eyebrows or eyelashes as it may lead to irritation and burning sensation in the eyes.
Use on mucous membranes like vagina, mouth, nose should be avoided as it is easily absorbed into the body from these sites.
Treatment for pubic lice (crab lice) should also be given to partner for complete eradication.
Family members of an affected person should be screened and offered treatment as well.
Avoid contact with people having lice as it may lead to the reappearance of symptoms. Lice can be transferred by air, through clothes, towel and other ways.
Machine wash all the clothes of the patient with warm water to kill any lice on the clothing.
Allergy to any of the two drugs, if present, should be reported to the doctor to avoid severe complications.
Storage of drug should be in a dry environment at room temperature. Keep it away from the reach of children.
The topical application of A200 Maximum Strength (pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide) eliminates the risk of systemic side effects. Stinging and burning sensation after its application may occur.
The skin may become too dry if it is used too often. If it is applied too close to the eye, it may lead to eye irritation. This should be followed by washing the eye as soon as possible and if there is still some irritation, it is important to consult a health care worker.
Other types of skin infections and allergic reactions to the drug may occur rarely. Any side effect which is present disappears completely after termination of a drug.
