Spironolactone helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt and keeps your potassium levels from getting too low. It can be used to prevent or treat hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the blood).
Spironolactone and hydrochlorothiazide are both diuretic medications (water pills). They reduce the amount of water in the body by increasing the flow of urine, which helps lower the blood pressure.

In these cases, your doctor may want to change your dose or take other precautions. Systemic lupus erythemotasus (SLE) - Use with caution. May make these conditions worse.
Sympathectomy - Effects of this medication causing the lowering of blood pressure may be increased.
3 Proper Usage
In addition to using Aldactazide, treatment for your hypertension may include weight control and changes in the types of food you eat, especially foods high in sodium and potassium. Your doctor will tell you which of these are most important for you. Ask your doctor before changing your diet.
Many patients who have hypertension will not notice any signs of a problem. It is very important that you take this medication exactly as directed and that you keep your appointments with your doctor, even if you feel well.
This medication will not cure your high blood pressure, but it will help to control it. You must continue to take it as directed if you expect it to lower your blood pressure and keep it down.
You may have hypertension for the rest of your life. If not treated, hypertension can lead to heart failure, blood vessel disease, stroke or kidney disease.

Do not keep expired medication or medication you no longer need. Ask your doctor how to dispose of any medication you do not use.
4 Precautions To Take
It is very important that your doctor checks in with you often while you are receiving Aldactazide to make sure that it is working properly. Blood and urine test may be needed to check for unwanted effects.
Do not take other medications unless they have been discussed with your doctor. This includes potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium, certain diuretics or other products containing spironolactone.
Inform your doctor immediately if blurred vision, difficulty reading, eye pain or any other change in vision occurs during or after treatment. This could be signs of a serious eye problem.
Fainting (syncope)especially when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position.
Make sure you know how you react to this medication before you drive, use machinery or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how this medication affects you. If you feel dizzy, lie down to keep from fainting. The sit for a few moments before standing to prevent the dizziness from returning.
