1 What is Arixtra?

Generic: Fondaparinux Sodium

Fondaparinux sodium is a drug used in the treatment and prevention of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs). This drug is available as single-dose, prefilled syringes containing either 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, or 10 mg of fondaparinux.

This drug is to be injected under the skin of the stomach or abdomen once daily or as directed by the doctor. Clean the site first prior to injection. Avoid injecting into a muscle. Your dosage is based on your medical condition and the way you will respond to treatment.

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. Continue to use it as prescribed by your doctor or as stated on the package label.

Interactions:

Fondaparinux sodium may interact with medications such as:

  • Mifepristone
  • Blood thinners or anti-platelet drugs such as dipyridamole or ticlopidine
  • Salicylates or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Sulfinpyrazone

Side Effects:

There are no side effects known aside from a possible allergic reaction in people who have previous or unknown hypersensitivity to the drug.

Watch out for signs of allergic reactions such as:

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Swelling

Warnings:

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have the following:

  • Allergy to fondaparinux
  • Bacterial endocarditis
  • Severe kidney disease
  • Bleeding/blood problems
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney disease
  • Seizures
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Stroke
  • Recent spinal procedures or puncture
  • Spine problems
  • Recent surgery especially on the eye, brain, or spine
  • Low body weight (less than 50 kilograms/110 pounds)
  • Pregnancy or lactation
